Lentils, Ash gourd with fish head(macher matha dia dal chalkumro)


  • fish head (tilapia or rui or katol ) : 1
  • Ash gourd/chalkumro: 1piece(500mg)(peel and cut into cubes)
  • Chana/chola/boot er dal or lentils:1/2cup(soak into water for 1 hour)
  • turmeric powder :2tsp
  • red chilies powder :1tsp
  • onion :1/2cup chopped
  • Cumin powder: 1 tsp
  • Coriander powder: 1 tsp
  • green chilies : 3
  • Salt to taste
  • oil: 1/4 cup
  • ginger paste : 1 tsp
  • garlic paste : 1 tsp
  • coriander leaves:2tbsp


Wash the fish with salt and lemon juice. Pat them dry with absorbent kitchen paper.
Coat pieces of fish head with salt and 1tsp turmeric powder. Heat oil in a fry pan on high flame, add fish and fry them until golden.
Wash and soak the dal for 1hour.
Heat oil in a saucepan, add onion and fry it. Now add ginger garlic paste,chilies powder, 1tsp turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder and 1/2cup water and cook until oil separates.
Add salt and fried fish. Cook on low flame for 5 min. adds lentils, mix it with fish and cover the lid. Again cook on low flame for 5 min. now add cubed ash gourd (chalkumra), cover and cook on low flame for 2mins.open the lid and pour 2 cup water and cover and cook over moderate heat. Stir occasionally.
Cook until lentils and ash gourd become tender. (If required add more hot water while cooking)
Adjust salt and add green chilies  and coriander leaves. Cover and cook for another 5 min on low flame.
Turn off the heat .serve hot with plain rice.
