Hilsha in coconut milk


  • Hilsha/ilish fish: 8 pieces(medium size ilish)
  • Coconut milk : 1 cup
  • Ginger juice: 1 tbsp
  • Onion paste/finely chopped: 1/2 cup
  • Red chili powder: 2tsp
  • Coriander powder: 1tsp
  • Salt as needed
  • Mustard oil: 1/4cup
  • Green chili, slit : 6
  • sugar: 1tsp


Wash and clean fish pieces and keep aside.
Pour the oil into a saucepan and bring up to a high heat. Now add onion paste, ginger juice, Red chili powder, salt and 2tbsp water into the saucepan and cook the gravy until oil separates. Add 1cup coconut and sugar and let it boil.
Now add the fish pieces and 1/2cup hot water into the masala gravy. Cover the lid tightly and cook on low flame for 1 hour or until oil separates.
Sprinkle some green chilies and cook for 2 minutes. Then turn off the heat.
 Serve with pulao or rice.
